The Winter Beauty Superfood Your Gut Will Love: Homemade Bone Broth
Dec 07, 2025
Bone broth is more than a cozy winter drink — it’s one of the most powerful healing foods you can bring into your daily routine. Thanks to its gelatin-rich base, bone broth helps repair and soothe the digestive tract, making it incredibly supportive for anyone dealing with constipation, diarrhea, bloating, or acid reflux. The gelatin acts like a natural sealant for the gut lining, helping strengthen the mucosal barrier and support a healthier microbiome. When your gut is calmer, inflammation naturally decreases throughout the body, which is why so many people notice clearer skin, better digestion, and improved overall wellbeing when they make broth a habit.
Beyond gut healing, bone broth is packed with nutrients that support joint health and mobility. It contains collagen, glucosamine, and chondroitin — the same compounds found in high-quality joint supplements — but in a whole-food form your body can actually absorb and use. These amino acids help cushion the joints, strengthen connective tissue, and calm inflammation around the knees, hips, and spine. If you’re lifting regularly or simply feeling the effects of midlife joint changes, bone broth delivers gentle, sustained support in a way that feels like nourishment rather than treatment.

Bone broth also shines as an immune system ally. It’s rich in minerals like magnesium, calcium, and potassium, along with anti-inflammatory amino acids such as glycine and proline. Together, these nutrients help regulate the immune response, ease upper respiratory symptoms, and support quicker recovery during cold and flu season. Many people find that sipping a warm cup in the evening not only soothes digestion but also improves sleep quality. Glycine — one of bone broth’s star amino acids — signals the nervous system to relax, helping promote deeper sleep and clearer mental focus the next day.
And then there’s the beauty piece — the reason so many women call bone broth their winter glow secret. The collagen and gelatin in bone broth provide the building blocks your body needs to create its own collagen, supporting firmer skin, stronger hair, and more resilient nails. Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in slow-simmered broth too, helping the skin retain moisture and look more hydrated and plump. Combined with its anti-inflammatory properties, bone broth can help calm acne, reduce redness, and soften the signs of premature aging. It’s truly a beauty-from-within superfood — simple, ancient, and incredibly effective.
Below is the nourishing homemade recipe I love and recommend:
Bone Broth Recipe
Ingredients
-
1 pasture-raised chicken carcass (skin and bones only)
-
½ onion, roughly chopped
-
1 celery stalk, roughly chopped
-
1 carrot, roughly chopped
-
1 tablespoon parsley (fresh or dried)
-
2–3 garlic cloves, smashed
-
1–2 bay leaves
-
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
-
Salt and pepper to taste
-
Filtered water (enough to fill your crockpot to the brim)
Optional for extra collagen:
-
1–2 chicken feet (if available)
Directions
-
Add the chicken carcass, vegetables, herbs, garlic, bay leaves, and apple cider vinegar to a large crockpot.
-
Sprinkle with salt and pepper, then pour filtered water over everything until the pot is filled.
-
Let the mixture sit for 20–30 minutes before turning on the heat — this helps the vinegar begin extracting minerals and collagen.
-
Slow-cook on low for 12–24 hours. The longer it simmers, the richer and more gelatinous your broth will be.
-
Strain through a fine-mesh strainer to remove bones and vegetables.
-
Taste and adjust seasoning with additional salt or pepper.
-
Store in jars in the refrigerator for up to 5 days, or freeze in cubes or mason jars for longer storage.
-
Your broth should gel when cold — a sign it’s loaded with collagen and ready to nourish your gut, immunity, joints, and glow.
Let's do this, lovelies; let's age well naturally. 💪🌿
