A ceiling and a floor: how to achieve your fitness goals from someone who learned the hard way

Writer: silverhighlights1971silverhighlights1971

Let’s talk about a ceiling and a floor.

Aging Well: Setting a Ceiling and a Floor
Aging Well: Setting a Ceiling and a Floor

My ceiling is 3 hours, all in: 20 minutes of cardio, 45 minutes of weightlifting, sauna, cold plunge, meditation.

My floor is 10 pushups, 10 air-squats and walking my dog for 15 minutes.

Both work.

Both are essential in my tool kit for achieving my fitness goals.

We women are different than men. Men can just plow through their plans with discipline and hit their goals. As women, we have our dreams and goals, but we also have enormous emotional and psychological loads to carry. We have family members who depend on us, we have fluctuating hormones and many of us are going through perimenopause, which can bring about fatigue and sleepless nights.

So it’s really important that we listen to our body. Know when your brain’s trying to talk you out of greatness, and when you need to take it easy.

Every day, I set out and give my very best to my goals. That means showing up every day; it's not about motivation and if I have it or not. I go to the gym out of discipline and self love for myself.

And then I see what I have to give. And some days all I have is 10%, and I’m fine with that.

Because I know I’ll be back to giving 100% soon.

So I give myself grace and space as I navigate my fitness and health goals.

Please keep in mind that progress isn’t linear. And consistency isn’t measured by how hard you go every day. To me, consistency is about showing up and doing your best that day.

And some days that’s my ceiling.

And some days that’s my floor.

We women are wired to be perfectionists. If we don’t have 45 minutes for a work out, fuck it, it’s a rest day. And we often never have 45 minutes. So our goals slide. And then we feel like shit. And it’s easy to watch a few fitness influencers and feel disheartened because we’re exhausted when we aren’t measuring up.

But remember no one else is carrying your burden.

What's important: Stay focused on your goals. Be patient and kind with yourself. Set your ceiling and your floor, and go be great.
